Q: A vice-presidential position is open at my company. What is the most effective way to let them know I am the perfect fit for the position? - Karen

A: Hopefully you have been doing this all along by networking with others in the company, putting your best into each project you handle, and showing them the great asset you are to the company.

If you have, the second step is easy. Find out who is going to be naming the new vice president and what the top five or six skills that person is seeking. Get out your marketing portfolio or résumé and make sure it is equal to the appointment of VP.

It must reflect those top five or six skills with proven examples of how effective you are in those areas. Added to that will be a letter of intent. This too must reflect that you have those skills. Use examples from the things you have already accomplished for the company. Reflect those proven skills in additional dollars brought in or an increase in clientele. Anything that is a quantifiable benefit to the company.

Put both on your finest paper, get it to the decision maker and keep networking!
