When to Tell Employer that You're Pregnant
Q: I am 10 weeks pregnant with my first and I want to get another job. I
do not feel that my current position is challenging me or moving ahead. When do I tell a potential employer that I am pregnant? Do I have to tell them in the interview? Am I still eligible for maternity leave? What are my rights?
Lisa
A:
This is a tricky situation. If you are intending to build a good
relationship with a new company, it is especially difficult but not
impossible. During your job search and interviewing keep your wonderful news
to
yourself. BUT if you want them to trust you, you must tell them during the
final negotiations. By then they want you or they would not be offering the
position.
Let them know you are a career person and how long you will be off
work to have your child and get the baby a good start, etc. Be sure to
remind them of what you can and will do for them. Don't make it sound
one sided as to what they can do for you. Assure them you already have
adequate childcare in place to prevent problems caused by young children.
That being said, I do not know about your maternity rights as far as
insurance. Your right to stay home for a few weeks or months would still
apply as that is federal law (if the company is large enough) but your health insurance could be in jeopardy.
Check all of that out carefully and have it in writing.
