Family-Friendly Employer
Sarah writes, "I was laid off last month. Since I have a couple months severance
I've decided not to look for a new job until after the holidays. I really
want to make sure I find a company that allows me to have flexible hours and
has family-friendly policies. How do I bring this up in an interview without
giving the impression that I'm not serious about working hard?"
Answer:
Use the time you've chosen to take off from job hunting as an opportunity to
reflect on what's most important to you. When you are clearer, you can
articulate more effectively.
There may be some risks involved in asking up
front for flexibility without having a proven track record. Look for
employers known for the family friendly benefits and 'sell' them on your
features (i.e., skills, talents, experience and education) and the reasons
you're the right person for the job. Emphasize how you can contribute vs.
what you need.
