Stepping into a new position with ease
So you finally received that long anticipated promotion. Now you must quickly develop a rapport with your new team, set goals and create a work environment that produces result. To ensure you start out on the right foot in your new position, we've collected advice to help fuel your train of success.
Know your job
Make certain you know exactly what your job is prior to accepting and the amount of support you can expect from the person above you.
If possible get a written job description and review it carefully. If there are any questions, get answers prior to moving into your new role. If you have any ambivalence going in, people will pick up on it. Spend some time with the person leaving the position. Ask lots of questions including their greatest challenges and successes.
Introduce yourself to everyone both as a group and one-on-one
Help those reporting to you get to know you quickly be telling them something about you, your skills and your background. You may have to work harder with reports who wanted the job you received but they can turn out to be your best employees.
Never bad mouth anyone
Don't position yourself as the department savior by bad mouthing the person who had your position before you. At the same time, you don't want to over promise change. Spend the first two weeks just observing and absorbing before you begin to make changes.
Be part of the new team
Making references to your old team and the ways you once did things with them is no way to develop a sense of teamwork. Be sensitive of their individual pride and the job they've been doing. It might not be way you'd do it, but chances are you won't be there if they were doing it in the most productive manner.
Compliment employees often
Everyone likes a pat on the back every once in a while. Sing praises in and in ear's length of others. When things go wrong, only criticize in private to avoid creating additional problems by delivering public humiliation on someone.
Try not to micromanage
Stay focus on the big picture and allow your supervisors to manage. Always make operational and procedure changes through your team leaders.
