Clothing for Busy Woman

Question: I work full time for an elementary school—which means I'm outside for recess, sitting on a rug for storytime and bending and climbing to put artwork on the walls, etc. Then, I also sell Avon products to different business offices. I also have a high-hip with a bulgy tummy. What should I wear?

Answer: My, you are a woman on the go, and one with diverse image needs!

With a high hip line, you want to avoid elastic waists and lots of pleats and gathers around the waist. High hip lines generally look best in straight-lined, tailored styles. But it sounds as if you need some fluidity to your clothing to allow for sitting on the floor, bending, climbing, etc. For this flexibility, I recommend garments made from matte jersey fabrics. They come in some sleek styles, and they’re comfortable and forgiving. Typically, they have an elastic waist, but some have the flat ones with no gathers; those in particular do not add extra bulk around the waist.

Generally, matte jersey skirts and pants are fairly straight lined which will work well for your high hip line. Layer the top pieces for a slenderizing effect. Wear a sleeveless top under a sleek matte-jersey over-blouse or soft jacket. That look is excellent for covering a bulgy tummy. Sweater sets can also be an excellent choice for you, but the top sweater or cardigan cannot be extremely boxy. Considering your work at the elementary school, denim—that is chic denim—garments can work well for you too. Just avoid wearing jeans with T-shirts and sneakers, as that portrays a too-casual image and is often perceived as sloppy. Furthermore, it’s ordinary. And since you’re also in the beauty business, you cannot afford to look ordinary. To maximize your Avon business, strive to look extraordinary, even when you’re exceptionally casual.

For your work at the school, opt for soft-sole shoes. There are actually many stylish ones on the market that do not have obvious rubber soles and are not sneakers. Keep a change of shoes (a dressier pair, high style) in your car for times when you call on business offices. Many salespeople that have a diverse clientele or that have to navigate varying terrain do this. For example, Realtors often go from construction sites to showings, to meetings with loan officers, to closings in offices. It’s not uncommon for them to have a small shoe wardrobe in the trunk of their car. Shoes can totally change an outfit and how you are perceived. You may want to keep a tailored jacket handy as well.

Accessories are also key in keeping the attention on the face. Since you have great hair and makeup, choose important-looking, expensive-looking accessories that accent your best facial features. Even when working at school, wear earrings and other appropriate jewelry.

Since you are an Avon representative, selling beauty products, it is essential that you look chic even when you’re dressed casually. The more attractive you are, the more people will want to buy from you.

Best of luck, Sherry Maysonave
