Question: I am currently in the process of growing my hair out. It is
almost shoulder length now and I would like to get it cut in some other
style beside the one length that it is now, but nothing too drastic because
as I said I am growing it out. My face is heart-shaped. Any suggestions?

Answer: Dear Sally,
As a rule, layered and texturized hairdos are flattering to heart-shaped faces. But keep in mind that layers limit what you can do with long hair. If you like to pull it back or put it up, layers do not work as well. You will need to consult a hairdresser (a very reputable one) if you have these issues.
For a non-drastic change, try some slight layering on the sides around your face and in the back, but not in the crown area. You could also cut it slightly shorter on the front sides, leaving the back a little longer; this works only if the sides and back are somewhat layered. The length difference should not be extremely obvious. This is a popular style in Hollywood.
I encourage you to establish a desired length for your hair rather than just having a broad “growing-it-out” goal. Depending upon your career goals, you may want to rethink the plan of growing it far beyond shoulder length. When a woman’s hair is more than 2 to 3” below shoulder length, it loses professionalism. If ultra long hair is your heart’s desire, then be prepared to pull it back or put it up when you’re “heading” to the office.
Best of luck to you,
