Question: I have a long face and a long neck too. I currently have medium-length black
hair. I don't know what kind of a hair cut would suit me. Any
suggestions?
Sally
Answer: Dear Sally,
A long neck is a beauty asset and a characteristic shared by many supermodels. When a long neck is in combination with a long face, the hair length becomes a bigger issue.
Let's explore what a medium-length hairstyle means. It is my experience that there is not a standard by which we all use to refer to such a length. Some women describe shoulder length hair or hair that grazes the top of the shoulders as medium length. Others say that mid-length is a hairstyle that comes to the mid-neck. Of course, that variable depends upon one's neck length. The longer bob (classic page-boy style) is often referred to as a mid-length do, as well. Clarification and specific length expectations are very important when working with a hair stylist. Often what one person means by long, mid-length, or short hair, another does not.
With both a long face and a long neck, you must avoid all really long hairstyles. From your description, It sounds as if the classic Cleopatra style would be the "longest" hairdo that you should consider. A hairdo longer than Cleo's creates an unflattering effect on a long face. Consider bangs or partial bangs as part of your ideal hairdo as they work to shorten a long face. Short hair is usually quite flattering on a long face, but that is matter of preference. Keep in mind that a short hairdo will emphasize a long neck. A tapered length (a style that is shorter in the back and longer on the sides) could also work well for you.
With a long neck, You can easily wear turtlenecks, mock turtles, mandarin collars, and all high-neck clothing. If you want to de-emphasize the length of your neck, the necklines listed above work well. In addition, avoid all plunging necklines and deep V's. Instead opt for widely scooped or ballerina necklines. If suitable to your personal style, you may want to experiment with some short scarves tied at the neck, short necklaces, or chokers. The now popular triple-strand pearl necklace (shorter length) would be beautiful on you, indeed.
Best of luck to you,
