Skirt Length
Question: I just purchased two long skirts for work. I am 5'4" and most long skirts are too long for me. I will be wearing high heels. Is there a certain measurement from the floor that I should be aware of? I'm just afraid that it's a bit too long. If the length should be at the ankle, is it the top or bottom of the ankle. I never have a problem with short skirts, but this one stumps me.
Thanks for your help.
Susan
Answer:
Long skirt lengths can indeed be confusing, so here's the scoop on evening versus daytime lengths. Floor length skirts are for dressy evening or formal wear. Long formal dresses and skirts should just graze the floor or come to about 1" above the floor with shoes.
Regular long skirts should come to the "ankle area." This means that the hem can be right on the ankle bone, or it can fall a few inches above or slightly below the ankle just covering the bump of the ankle bone. With this, you have some leeway as far as the correct length for you. There is not a rule regarding a precise measurement from the floor for regular long skirts, only one for formal wear.
To avoid that frumpy looking length, don't go shorter than four inches above your ankle, measuring from the top of the ankle. Since you are 5'4" tall, you will appear taller and thinner if your long skirts come to about two inches above your ankle.
Best of luck to you,
