Buying Maternity Clothes

Question: I recently found out that I am pregnant & I was wondering about how far along will I be to where I will need to wear maternity clothes? My friends told me that I won't need them until I am 6 months along.

Answer: Congratulations on your pregnancy! Even though you are thin now, your waist will begin to thicken quickly; your bust line may rapidly increase as well. But you probably will not need real maternity clothes until your 5th or 6th month. It varies for each individual, particularly relevant are your pelvic structure and how high or low you carry the baby.

Stay in your regular clothes as long as you are comfortable, and sometimes even they can be adjusted for your comfort. When just a few inches room is needed in your pants and skirts, try the rubber band trick; it works wonders. Here’s the trick: For pants or skirts that have waistbands with button and zipper (front, side, or back) closures, insert one end of the rubber band through the buttonhole with the other end looped around the button. Bring the end from inside the buttonhole over the top and attach it to the button too. This gives you a bit more room even when fully zipped. You can also make a chain of safety pins to extend the waist, but they’re not as comfortable as a rubber band. With either stretcher, you will need to wear an overblouse or cover the band or pins with a jacket or cardigan.

Enjoy this time. It is special!
