Q. What are the best supplements to take to speed up my metabolism? I am currently taking Chromium Picolinate which is suppose to be a fat burner. -- Lacey

A. Chromium Picolinate does not make you thinner, more muscular, stronger or give you more energy. Unfortunately, patenting laws do not require that claims for health products be validated, so marketers of these types of products often stretch the truth till it’s paper thin.

Further, the safety of this product has not been confirmed. In laboratory tests, some chromosomal damage was noted after testing this supplement on animals. Another possible side effect for women is that the supplement may make you anemic if you take it for longer then several months. Bottom line is there are no pills that can safely cause your metabolism to be increased.

To permanently increase your metabolism, you must replace the lean muscle mass that you have lost. There is only one way to do this and it is called strength training. I would recommend adding weights into your exercise program at least 3 times a week. Spend your money on something else. The pills are not a good idea.
