Storage in Bonus Room

Question: How would you create a pretty storage area in a "bonus" room? This room has a low ceiling the shape of the roof so there's not the same height solutions like regular walls. We have lots and lots of camping supplies that need to go somewhere (like large sleeping bags, large backpacks, and large other luggage containers). My husband and children love camping and need a variety of equipment depending on the situation so I can't throw this away. Help! Thanks!

Answer: One of the best ways to store things is to CONTAIN them. And you're in luck: most retail stores are having their container sales this month!

My sister in law is an avid camper, and she likes to use sturdy totes with grippable handles for their bags, lights, tents, backpacks, and other gear. When it's time to load the car before a weekend rock climbing, she only has a few tubs to carry to the car rather than making multiple trips back and forth from the storage room.

Depending on your preference and what will be stored in each container, you might consider a variety of styles. Some storage containers have a snap on lid, others have one that swings open from the side like a footlocker, while others have two hinged lids that open from the middle for easy retrieval. (that's a good one with kids always opening and closing containers full of snacks and goodies on those outings!).

The beauty of using storage containers is that they are stackable (especially if you get uniform sizes and shapes), portable, easy to pack in your car, and air tight in case of bad weather. And if you get rid of any of your gear or replace it with different kinds, you can easily adapt your storage unit.

Of course you can also purchase a closet organizing unit based on the shapes and sizes of all your camp gear, then neatly stash your gear away in the room. There are nice tall cabinets with doors to hide the gear when it's not in use, but you will find yourself limited in abilities to store due to your angled roof/ceiling line.

If you do choose a free-standing unit, shelves with standards, or stackable tubs, you can easily hide your Camping Corner with a decorative screen.

Regardless of where you set up your storage area, you'll have all your gear in one spot and can enjoy your outing. Happy Camping!

Good luck,
