IRS & Receipts

Question: Does the irs require the original receipt or is a copy sufficient?
Jim

Answer: My past experience with paper management has been limited to home and home office documentation, and according to my accountant, copies of receipts are just fine. Afterall, many of us file our original receipts with warranties and credit card statements, merely keeping copies with our tax records.

However, if you own a business or need help organizing and storing papers for your corporate office, I highly recommend containing the IRS directly. Their website is just full of helpful tidbits such as these, but if you can't find the answer you're looking for, don't hesitate to contact them directly at their toll-free number: 1-800-829-1040. This is the best time to confer with them, when it's not tax season-- way to plan ahead, Jim!

Here is the URL for the IRS' website: http://www.irs.gov

Live Telephone Assistance: Call 1-800-829-1040. (Hours of Operation 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday - Friday). During the tax-filing season, the IRS will include a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday service.

Good luck,
