Q. I am tired all the time. I've been checked by a doctor, and I'm totally healthy. I'm a single parent of two boys, age 50, and I commute by train to work [over an hour each way] and get at most 6-1/2 hours sleep a night during the work week. Part of my weight problem is that I'm just too exhausted to exercise. - Jessica S.

A. I can't be sure exactly what your fatigue might be related to but here are some things to consider:

  • Research has shown that 7- 8 hours of sleep is optimal for most women. An extra ½ hour to an hour of sleep each evening may help to re-charge your battery a bit.

  • Are you drinking enough water? Even before you become dehydrated, under hydration can cause you to feel run down, irritable and anxious.

  • Do you drink a lot of caffeine? At first, caffeine can give you a "jolt" of energy, but if you drink it throughout the day it can disturb your sleep and leave you feeling groggy in the morning.

  • Are you eating lots of fruits and vegetables? They're loaded with the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to run efficiently.

  • Do you take a multivitamin? I suggest that you do. Getting enough nutrients on a regular basis can be tricky, even for women who eat a very healthy balanced diet.

  • Do you exercise regularly? Consistent moderate exercise can energize you and fight fatigue.

I hope this is helpful.
