Q. I’m 40 and pregnant for the first time. Are there exercises which are safe during pregnancy?

A. Yes, provided your doctor clears you. Experts now agree that moderate cardiovascular exercise and strength training during pregnancy is safe and if you are going to continue exercising, it’s best to exercise at least three times a week consistently as opposed to every now and then.

Just keep in mind that now is not the time to try any exercise that you did not do before you became pregnant. Many doctors recommend walking, cycling and swimming as good choices for cardiovascular exercise when pregnant. And for strength training, invest in handheld weights and ankle weights ranging from 2 to 10 pounds. Perform a variety of strength exercises. And don’t forget Kegels.

Some pointers: Don’t exercise flat on your back after the first trimester. Don’t do exercises that could cause you to lose your balance.
