Where did the weekend go?
By Maria Bailey
Let me start by saying, I love my family and I love spending time with them. But whatever happened to weekends when you had a chance to relax? Perhaps that doesn't happen for another eighteen years once you have children but I can't help but wish for what used to be.
Whatever happened to those weekends when you could lay on the couch and read a good romance novel? Whatever happened to those weekends when you could spend hours rummaging through antique shops? Whatever happened to those weekends when you could start and finish a project like painting the bathroom or planting seasonals?
Oh, how I dread the inevitable question from those single, childless weekend-loving co-workers I meet on Mondays in the elevator. "So what did you do this weekend?" they ask with a big smile on their face. The truth is they would be exhausted just listening if I told them. Well, let's see. Today, we went to a first-grade basketball game at 10 a.m., a soccer game at noon, a team party at 2 p.m., I cleaned up vomit at 3:30 p.m., I went to the grocery store at 4 p.m., helped the kids build a fort right after I cooked them all dinner, put them to bed at 8 p.m. and headed to my computer to answer e-mails and write.
So here it is midnight on a Saturday night and I'm wondering when I'm going to relax this weekend. Isn't that what you are suppose to do on Saturday and Sunday? Did someone forget to tell some one that moms are included that rule? Well, there's always tomorrow right? Wrong. First, there's Mass, then an all day Baby Shower, followed by my weekly trip to the grocery store so I can begin preparing my family for my absence this week when I must travel for business. Awesome! Tomorrow, I get to pack 12 different school lunches! (That's how many I'll need to have in the refrigerator when I leave town for three days.)
Life has become too busy. But suddenly I'm reminded of an essay I read recently. Time is something we live and it's up to us to choose how we are going to allocate our time. If we can't find time to do something, we'd like to do, it's up to us to make better choices in what we choose to do with our time. Wise advise we can all live with. We need to choose to those things that matter to us most. So having taken these words of wisdom to heart, I'm going to turn off my computer, snuggle into one of my children's bed and cherish the moment. And on Monday when someone asks me what I did this weekend? I'm going to answer proudly, "I was a mom."
Good night, hug your child and have a great week.
